Godless --Limited TV Series Netflix USA 2017  (7 x 70 Min episodes)

Truly Excellent Western Series

In 1884 Ruthless outlaw Frank Griffin terrorizes the West in search of a Roy Goode, former member of his gang. Goode has found a new life in La Belle N.M. a quiet town populated mainly by women after a mining accident killed most of the town’s able-bodied men.

This is a modern western – it doesn’t seek to revise history but nonetheless includes a more representative cross section of major players than we traditionally find in this genre; men and women, whites, African Americans, Native Americans, good and bad, saints and sinners, simpletons and sociopaths alike. Refreshing.

There are lots of moments of real warmth, and some moments of humour to balance the drama. It is beautifully conceived and filmed, the characters are well drawn, the series is long enough to have a bit of everything in it, all the ends are neatly tied up, and (bearing in mind no single story provides the true and complete history of every aspect of everything) the climax of the story is everything we could hope for.

MA 15+ Rating: A couple of yucky moments, but we have seen much worse elsewhere. The ruthless outlaw commits murder and mayhem, but perhaps the most triggering scene is of one female character being pack raped – it’s not a long drawn out scene but it is graphic and violent.

Bingeability: At no point did the story seem to drag at all, and I resented having to leave the house for an appointment half way through. The best western I have ever seen.
